When he was in his early 20s Beethoven established a sensational reputation with brilliant improvisations at the piano that had a profound effect on his listeners’ emotions.
So impressive and moving were these extemporized works that several aspiring pianists attempted to claim Beethoven’s material as their own compositions, inserting his musical elements into their own performances.
He responded by publishing his first formal works, establishing authorship and confounding the piano technique of his competitors through his challenging writing.
